The Old Cinema
It has been suggested that the old
cinema should be developed as a
community facility. So far we have
said little on this but believe it is now
time to put the record straight. In
2005 our former Mayor, Cllr Danny
Cracknell and the Town Clerk met
with the owners of that property. We
were offered a 999 year lease of the
first and second floors, fully
refurbished, to use as a community
hall/cinema/theatre at a cost of about
1.5 million pounds. Our Finance
Officer had worked out that subject to
certain conditions we could probably
just about afford to go forward with
this scheme. However, before final
details were available and full costings
investigated, Cllr Michael Thierry
persuaded the Town Council to
support an alternative scheme on the
site of the existing toilets. The plan he
presented to Council would have
required the demolition of the toilets
and almost certainly removal of the
plane trees. The Town Council was
told that the new building could be in
place by 2007. In the interests of
openness, the Council is now making
available for public inspection a copy
of the report it considered on this
issue together with the confidential
minutes of the meeting at which the
matter was discussed. Both are
available on our website and at the
Council’s offices.
